Can anyone please explain to me where the debit c/f balance of $57 on the debit side has come from?

Yes it still is a credit balance (You can put 57 $ as an opening balance Oct 1 20x9 in credit side)

"Balance c/f" is usually used as a balancing line to calculate the closing balance figure.

If you sum the total both of side debit balance is 71752 and credit balance is 71809. The difference mean c/f and which side is a under balance you need to put c/f on that side.

so this means the customers who had credit balances totaling $57 at open Oct 1 20x8 still had credit balances by open Oct 1 20x9 $57?
